On the night that the death angel was to come throughout Egypt and slay the firstborn, instructions were given. Moses relayed a message from the Lord God on how to slay a lamb and mark each house with the blood. The blood was to cover the doorpost and sideposts signifying that the house was covered and under a sign of covenant with God Almighty. This was an act of obedience and it required simple faith that when the death angel came, he would pass by because of the blood. Within the different homes I can only imagine that there were homes filled with trepidation and fear, and then their were those filled with worship and praise. The Israelites had already seen that the Lord was destroying the gods of the Egyptians with the plagues that matched and marked each god with destructive force. Yet this last act of judgment would inevitably be the worse.
As cries and screams filled the streets, hearts of families torn and broken as death entered in snatching their loved ones away, the Israelites awaited their destiny. I can only imagine that there were those who spent the night in agony wondering if the blood would be enough. Would the markings of the blood and the sacrifice of the Lamb be sufficient in keeping the death angel away. I’m sure some spent the night in anxiety and fear, while others rested peacefully in confidence of the sacrifice. Inevitably though in the morning those whose homes were marked with the blood were spared and saved, whether they believed or not, whether they had fear or faith. You see the blood of Jesus is sufficient to save, deliver and heal, it’s our own belief systems and paradigms that hinder us from walking in peace and confidence. My friend Jesus paid it all so that we don’t have to! All He asks is for us to believe, and receive. In that obedient, receptive walk He leads us to green pastures and cool springs, restoring our souls.
